Book Review – Lone Rider

In a time before GPS navigation, mobile phones, the internet, and Google translate, travelling the globe would have been so much more daunting and challenging.

A time when you took the motorcycle on an adventure, way before ‘adventure’ bikes were a thing.

It is hard to believe that in 1982 when Elspeth Beard set off from London on her 1974 BMW R60/6, the motorcycle journalistic community seemed disinterested in her two-year solo round the world motorcycle trip.

Lone Rider is Elspeth’s story, told some years after her trip when the world caught-up and became interested in her story. And what an amazing adventure it was.!

Elspeth takes you on her journey from how she got into motorcycling and travelling, to taking off and riding around the world solo. The highs and lows of being on the road, experiencing the many different cultures, challenges of border crossings, all while keeping her motorcycle together and working as the trip slowly destroys it.

Generally, travel books end as the traveller rolls up their driveway. But as this is written years later, Elspeth gives us a glimpse at re-entering her old world after two-years on the road and the impact the trip had on her life.

In conclusion, this is a great read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves travel and motorcycle travel / adventure.
